The biggest release of the year is here! On Tuesday, January 21st the third book in the Fourth Wing series will hit shelves everywhere. Highly anticipated, Onyx Storm will be the talk of the book world for the next few weeks, and I am here for it!
I first heard about Fourth Wing when it came out in the spring of 2023. I was dealing with a lot at the time, and reading was taking a back seat as I focused on my health, so I didn’t think too much of it. A couple of weeks after its release, I went to order the book so I could give it a read. There were so many outstanding reviews, and they were everywhere on BookTok and Bookstagram. You know the saying, the early bird gets the worm? In this case, the early birds got the special edition sprayed edges version of Fourth Wing that was sold out and would not be reprinted. Kicking myself, I ordered the standard edition, which took MONTHS to get. That was how popular this book was. It sold out its initial release in days and took months to reprint and become available.
When I finally got my hands on the book, I devoured it. I was so sad when it ended because I could never go back and read it for the first time. It was that good! I wanted to be able to erase my memory or travel back in time so that I could experience the story all over again. Violet Sorrengail (main character) and her battle through the year at Basgaith College had won me over. Not to mention Xaden Riorson…IYKYK. Unfortunately, time travel does not exist, and Will Smith didn’t zap me with the memory eraser thingy from Men in Black, so I was out of luck. The world didn’t have to wait long for the second book in the series, as Iron Flame came out in the fall of 2023, along with a special edition of Fourth Wing. I did not hesitate on this release, pre-ordering both from an independent bookstore in Saskatoon to ensure I got the pretty versions because I absolutely judge a book by its cover.
This happens to me all the time. I get so excited for a release that I don’t read it immediately. And that is what I did with Iron Flame. I waited for almost a YEAR…why??...before picking it up and reading it with a couple of friends who were reading it at the same time. We chatted back and forth as we tore through the 640 pages. I had a love-hate relationship with Iron Flame. I won’t spoil anything, but I have some things to say if you have read the book and want to chat in person. I mean, that ending! I was ANGRY! Needless to say, I cannot wait for the release of Onyx Storm so I can finally know what the heck is going on! Can I promise I will love it? No. But that isn’t everything that makes a book exciting. Four of us will be reading the book almost immediately; some of us may even have taken the day off to start reading…lol. Not me; you’ll find me at the shop, but I may have my copy open between customers.
If you have read this series, I’d love to know your thoughts. Especially after we all consume Onyx Storm, but no spoilers! If you haven’t, maybe you should!
